This was the year The Sheik began a five-year unbeaten streak in the main events at Maple Leaf Gardens. During the year, Sheik fought and defeated Whipper Billy Watson, Lou Thesz, Bruno Sammartino, Gene Kiniski, and others. The year was also notable for the Maple Leaf Gardens debut of Angelo Mosca and the Love Brothers, and the first local appearance of NWA champion Dory Funk Jr.
